Alas, the month known as Movember has come to a ceremonious close – the annual celebration of the moustache, highlighting and raising money in support of men’s health issues, specifically prostate and testicular cancer and mental health – and mo’s were plenty throughout the month.
The second edition of Movember Algarve was a tremendous success, with donations reaching just over 4500€ and, most importantly, a growing community of over 2,500 men and women speaking openly about men’s issues. The month kicked off with several events and hundreds of men shaving down to start the journey of growing a mo. Ollie’s Bar in Luz held a Movember awareness event during the England v Australia rugby match, with a focus on awareness toward testicular cancer (‘know thy balls’) with proceeds from all footlong meatball sandwiches sold during the game reverting towards Movember.
On the 18th of November, 72 players of all ages and nationalities came together for the first edition of the Movember Classic – an annual golf tournament organised by Burgau Sports Centre – raising an incredible +2500€ of donations that morning alone. The month carried on with several events, including a Quiz Night at Barroca Bar, and ended on a high note with the End of the Month Party at Beer&Co Lagos. A fun filled night with free Heineken’s for all mo-bros and sisters that donated throughout the month, live music and a vintage barber chair and barber doing free shaves throughout the night. The month ended with a Mo-Down, with a surprise win from a Mo-sister (that drew a moustache, convinced several men to donate and grow a moustache and became a champion for men’s health) taking the prize for best Mo 2021 and 100€ voucher from Jah Shaka Lagos.
‘We are tremendously happy with the results and, above all, the reach of this year’s event. We achieved our goals in terms of donations and, most importantly, participants and managed to bring the community closer together’ says Lee Moulton, producer of the event. 2022 is just around the corner and while there are still 12 months to go for the next round of Movember, a Maystache may be on the cards – so stay tuned!
